THE MOOSALAMOO REGION |
Camping is wonderful at the Vermont State Park of Branbury set on the shores of Lake Dunmore, at Silver Lake where the Green Mountain National Forest maintains simple campsites along the edge of this mountain lake, and at the Moosalamoo campground at the foot of Mount Moosalamoo.
In the spring thousands of ephemeral woodland wildflowers carpet the forest floor. Later in the season purple asters, goldenrod and ripening grasses precede the spectacular autumn foliage display. The large contiguous habitat is home to numerous animals, large and small, from moose to bobcat, and from bear to weasel (in the winter these little animals transform themselves into white ermine). The birds of Moosalamoo include many hawks, riding the thermals of the Green Mountains, and the recently reestablished Peregrine Falcons that nest on the Cliffs of Mount Horrid and Rattlesnake Cliffs. The Moosalamoo Region was not always the forested landscape that is seen today. Much of the area was cleared in the early 1800's for growning crops and grazing animals. Family cemetaries, stone foundations, cellar holes, and miles of stone walls can be found while hiking through the woods of Moosalamoo. Headstones in the Dutton Family Cemetary Take a
